Annual Dictionary Project
By: Nathan Wallace

Fall is the time of year when Dothan Rotarians participate in itsAnnual Dictionary Project. For many year's, our Club has purchased dictionaries and distributed to Third Grade Students in the community. On Monday, September 23, please bring your checkbook/credit cards, and/or cash and help raise the $2400 needed to purchase 700 books and labels with Rotary's 4-Way Test printed on them. A label will be placed inside each dictionary.
New This Year-- Two (2) Alabama vs Ole Miss Football Tickets for September 28 will be auctioned during our Club meeting on Sept. 23. Excellent Seats--Section M, Row 26
Why is the Dictionary Project important? Itis important for students to have their own dictionaries. With their own book, they can look up words that they don't understand, as well as become more fluent and comfortable using a variety of words in their speaking and writing.
How does the Dictionary Project work?At each Dothan City School, 3-4 Rotarians will visit each Third Grade Classroom and hand out the dictionaries to each student. This year, nearly 700 dictionaries will be handed out in 9 schools. Rotarians will talk a little about what Rotarians do and the 4-Way Test. The Rotarians, in conjunction with each teacher, will help students use their new dictionaries to look up several words in the 4-Way Test such asTruth, Fair, and Beneficial.
How does this project benefit our community? The Dictionary Project provides an opportunity for Rotarians to meet and converse with both the Third Grade students, their teachers, school staff and the principal for the school thereby providing a necessary link between Rotary and primary education. The Dictionary Project is a key element in fulfilling Rotary Literacy goals.
