Rotarian Dr. James Kelly, introduced Ms. Linda Garrett and Mr. Stanley Davis, organizers of N.I.C.E., Neighbors Improving Children's Education. Ms. Garrett said she was moved to action when another good Dothan Rotarian, Dr. Tim Wilder, Dothan City School Superintendant, challenged the Dothan Community Relations Group to take the lead in developing a plan to help resolve issues facing Dothan City Schools. N.I.C.E was formed, issues identified and a plan of action put in place. Parental involvement, Discipline and Closing the Achievement Gap are their three pillars of grassroots outreach. Mr. Stanley Davis had a most effective object lesson. He asked everyone to stand who grew up in a two parent home, over 90 per cent stood up. He asked all who grew up in a one parent home to stand, less than 10 per cent stood. He then said, "Now, reverse that. That's what we're dealing with, with our at risk youth." Mr. Davis further impressed by modifying our own four-way test to illustrate what these students need and what N.I.C.E.are trying to do. N.I.C.E is not just talking about the problem, they are doing something about it. Answering Rotarian Bill Lee's question, Ms. Garrett and Mr. Davis said they are having bi-weekly mentoring meetings at Walton Park. They said they weren't asking us for anything, but if you want to visit their website, that would be alright, www.nicedothan.org. It dovetails N.I.C.E-ly, with our Mr. Morris' YesWeCanDothan; our adopted school, Girard Middle; and even our Dictionary Project.
Thank you Dr. Kelly, though retired, you're still educating us; and thank you Ms. Garrett and Mr. Davis. Great program.

![]() | OPPORTUNITIES AND FLOWERS By: Greg Gregory |
Fellow Rotarians,
With the flowers in bloom it seems like spring is already here. Regardless of whether or not this is a false spring, it is a busy time of the year for Rotary and there are several opportunities I would like to share with you.
Don't forget that you've got an opportunity to help fund a Shelter Box. These boxes are kits that contain a tent, stove, cooking utensils and many other survival items for an extended family. They can be sent any where in the world to assist in a disaster. Each box costs $1,000 to fund. Last year the club furnished 2 Shelter Boxes that have already been sent to Kenya. Please bring a check to Virginia to help support this worthy cause.
Many of you have stepped forward to help host, tour, and plan for our GSE team from Portugal that will be visiting at the end of April. Many thanks to you and to Leila Smith for chairing this project. This year's team is comprised of 5 ladies. In the coming days Leila will be working on putting their vocational days together. These ladies have individual interests in the following areas: Forestry Management (specialty in cork harvesting), archaeology and history, political scientist, human resource management, and a clinical psychologist with an emphasis in behavioral and health institutions. Please contact Leila if you have any ideas to help meet the interests of our visitors on their vocational day.
Many of you are familiar with the WRC's REAL Project, run by Jon Lee. This worthy project helps provide ambulatory devices, wheelchairs, and other medical equipment to needy individuals. Information on their major fund raiser follows:
JONJAM 2012
Please join us at Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, February 18th, from 3-10PM for our 4th Annual JONJAM and 1st Annual Chili Cook-Off. It will be a GREAT time for the whole family with lots of GREAT music, AWESOME food, and lots of FUN for the kids. The band lineup will be: Jon's band, Lowdown South from 4-6PM, Saltwater Grass from Jacksonville, FL from 6-8PM and Rollin' in the Hay from 8-10PM. All proceeds are to benefit the operation of The REAL Project, a division of Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center. Tickets in advance are $20 and at the gate $25. Kids 14 and under are FREE. This is an event you don't want to miss! Come join in the fun and give to a really great cause! All details on JONJAM and to purchase tickets or donate, please visit www.jonjam.com.
As a Rotarian you plant flowers when a shelter box shows up to give a temporary home to a family in a disaster, you plant flowers as you build relationships with our guests from Portugal, and you plant flowers when you help support JONJAM.
Thank you for all the flowers you plant in your community and world.
Greg
