District Grant for the Tuskegee Polio Recognition Project
By: Sheila Azar

Good News!
The Dothan Rotary Club applied for and has received a $3,000 District Grant designated for the Tuskegee Polio Recognition Project. The Dothan Tuesday Rotary Club has been awarded the same grant. This project is to recognize and honor the important work conducted at Tuskegee University in the treatment and rehabilitation of the polio stricken Black population and the research conducted to fight the disease by Black workers and researchers at Tuskegee. The Tuskegee Infantile Paralysis Center was the focal point for this treatment and rehabilitation work along with so many dedicated Black physicians and support personnel.
A monument will be placed on the campus of Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama. The monument will consist of a life-size bronze statue depicting Dr. John W. Chenault, nurse Warrena A. Turpin and patient young Gordon Stewart. In addition, a large bronze plaque mounted on a granite base recognizing officers of Tuskegee Institute at this time and the Infantile Paralysis Center Medical and Administration Staff.
Funding for this project will come from the many donors who wish to help honor those in the fight against the dreaded polio disease and honoring one of the few centers that treated the Black community at the time.
You can find more information on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/tuskegeepolioproject
The leadership team of Rotary District 6880 and the Administration of Tuskegee University is in full support of this project.

Dicitionaries for Third Graders
By: George Flowers

Dothan Rotary Club provides dictionaries for all third graders in Dothan City Schools. We place a label with the Rotary Four Way Test on the inside cover of the books. The dictionaries have been received as well as the Four Way Test labels.
We need help after our meeting Monday, to place the labels on the books and then deliver them to the schools. If you can stay after the meeting to help, we can get these dictionaries in the hands of the students. We will be doing this in one of the meeting rooms in Rotary Hall, Monday, October 4th.

Purple Pinkie Donuts Time
By: Charles Buntin

It is Purple Pinkie Donut time again! Some of you may ask, exactly what is a Purple Pinkie Donut and why do we support it?
In countries where the threat of polio remains high, every child under age 5 receives polio vaccine by mouth twice per year during events called “National Immunization Days.” When vaccinating millions of children in a short period of time it is impossible to document which child has received the vaccine, so every child vaccinated has the little finger (pinkie) nail of their left hand painted purple with marker that doesn’t wash off for about a month. Local communities recognize that children with “purple pinkies” will never get polio.
Smallpox is the only human disease ever eradicated. We can help make polio the second! The Dothan Rotary Club is selling a boxes of Duncan Donuts for $25 each then with programs of matching funds, our $25 turns into $187.50. We have to preorder by Oct 11th and you will be able to pick up your order at our meeting on October 18th.
Another option is to purchase the donuts and donate them to our local Fire / EMS / Law Enforcement / Healthcare Workers as a way to show appreciation for their hard work, just let us know if you want to do that and we will take care of delivery.
If you would like to help raise awareness and help eliminate Polio by purchasing Purple Pinkie Donuts, please email: President@DothanRotary.com.

Care Bags for Nurses
By: Walter Hill

Thank you all so very much. You responded in a big way by donating money for the Care Bags for Nurses. Because of your generosity, we will be preparing 483 Care Bags. This will enable us to give one to every nurse in the ER and ICU at both hospitals. Each bag will contain several beverages, lotion, lip balm, various snacks and a thank you card. The cards are being prepared by the students at the Boys’ & Girls’ Club of the Wiregrass.

We will meet on Monday, October 25 to assemble the Care Bags. All of the items will be at WRC and we will meet there at 10:00 a.m. We need help. It will take more than a few of us to get them finished before our lunch meeting. However, with enough people we can have an efficient assemble line and finish before the meeting.

After Rotary on October 25, we will deliver them to the two hospitals. They are already expecting us after lunch on that day. Anyone that can go is invited to join us. This was a club project so we want as many Rotarians as possible to be there when we drop them off. We will give exact locations for each hospital drop off point at the meeting that day. We expect local media to cover the delivery.

Special thanks to my committee for all of their help: Donna Clemmons, Captain Deanne Jones, Katherine Mele, Alan Richards and Pastor Darryl Roberts. I also want to thank President Sheila Azar for her encouragement and leadership. Without her, this would not have happened.
