Care Bags for Nurses
By: Walter Hill

If you missed the meeting on Monday, September 13, we kicked off our new project. We are going to prepare and deliver care bags to both hospitals. The bags will be for ICU and ER nurses and staff. Since Monday, we have learned there are 483 staff in these roles at Flowers Hospital and Southeast Health. We have already collected $773. We will prepare however many bags the money we collect will allow. However, to make enough bags for the 483 staff we need to collect at least $3,000. We will be collecting donations again on Monday, September 20 and Monday, September 27. Please contribute what you can. Checks are made payable to Dothan Rotary Club. Cash is certainly accepted. You can also Venmo me to make a donation @Walter-Hill-21 and just note it is for Rotary Care bags. Let’s rally together to raise the money we need. When we are ready to prepare and deliver the bags, we will invite you to help in both areas.

District Grant for the Tuskegee Polio Recognition Project
By: Sheila Azar

Good News!
The Dothan Rotary Club applied for and has received a $3,000 District Grant designated for the Tuskegee Polio Recognition Project. The Dothan Tuesday Rotary Club has been awarded the same grant. This project is to recognize and honor the important work conducted at Tuskegee University in the treatment and rehabilitation of the polio stricken Black population and the research conducted to fight the disease by Black workers and researchers at Tuskegee. The Tuskegee Infantile Paralysis Center was the focal point for this treatment and rehabilitation work along with so many dedicated Black physicians and support personnel.
A monument will be placed on the campus of Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama. The monument will consist of a life-size bronze statue depicting Dr. John W. Chenault, nurse Warrena A. Turpin and patient young Gordon Stewart. In addition, a large bronze plaque mounted on a granite base recognizing officers of Tuskegee Institute at this time and the Infantile Paralysis Center Medical and Administration Staff.
Funding for this project will come from the many donors who wish to help honor those in the fight against the dreaded polio disease and honoring one of the few centers that treated the Black community at the time.
You can find more information on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/tuskegeepolioproject
The leadership team of Rotary District 6880 and the Administration of Tuskegee University is in full support of this project.
